WDR Static Dome Cameras
O
ne of the main problems with video
surveillance has been the capture of
detailed images in applications with
unbalanced illumination. The issue of both
dark and bright areas in one scene has been
addressed by wide dynamic range
functionality. The test was split into two parts:
Brightness Compensation and Darkness
Compensation.
Samsung SCD-3080
Samsung’s SCD-3080 uses the manufacturer’s
SV-5 chipset to deliver high resolution WDR
performance. Resolution is claimed as 600 TV
lines; that’s in standard old-fashioned
horizontal resolution. Sensitivity is quoted as
0.3 lux for a 50IRE image.
Functionality is high, as many have come to
expect from the SV-5 enabled products, and
options include day/night switching, simple
profiles for varying conditions, virtual
progressive scan, SSNR 3D noise reduction,
SSDR, image stabilisation and intelligent
video analysis. WDR can be configured as Low
Middle or High, with Level settings and indoor
or outdoor bias!
A point of note here is that SSDR (Samsung
Super Dynamic Range) is not the same as
WDR. Despite this, some manufacturers like to
pit their WDR offering against cameras with
just SSDR. SSDR is very much for levelling out
subtle shading differences that might affect
detail in a scene. If you try using SSDR instead
of WDR, you will be disappointed, as it simply
isn’t designed for hostile illumination issues.
Switch from SSDR and WDR, and you’ll soon
spot the difference.
The camera is fitted with a 2.8-11mm
varifocal lens. The housing is a simple twist on
plastic unit, and the camera is intended for
internal applications only. Connections are
carried out via three flyleads. These are video
out (BNC), power in (screw-type connectors)
and an output for motion detection alarms, as
well as an input to switch day/night operation
externally, which is welcomed.
Traditionally, SV-5 cameras from Samsung
do offer a high level of flexibility, and rushing
in can result in a poor image. It’s not just a
Wide dynamic range is a hot topic in video
surveillance. Benchmark tested a number of
cameras to see what the technology delivers.
