o matter what the application, video
surveillance is very much a visual tool.
You can build in all the analytics that
you want, you can add intelligence until the
cows come home, and it matters not unless
the output of the system can be viewed. Many
installers, specifiers, consultants and end
users will strive to achieve the highest
possible quality they can from their CCTV
system, but the final quality, the viewed
image, is very much dependent upon the
display.
When LCD displays first appeared in the
CCTV sector, there were a fair few people that
weren’t that keen on them. If the truth be told,
many of the Benchmark team could be
included in that number. The CRT might have
been bulky, it might have been less economic
to run, and it might have even been less
energy efficient, but the image quality was
very hard to beat. Indeed, even today a decent
CRT will often compare favourably with a good
LCD display.
That said, the transition to LCD displays as
the mainstream monitor of choice in the CCTV
sector is over, and there’s little point in harking
back to an almost obsolete technology. The
slimline sized, energy efficient, flexible and
functional LCD display is here, and image
quality has also been improving all the time,
and is set to continue to improve!
There are a number of important
specifications for CCTV monitors, but the real
test is a very simple one; how good do the
images look? Can the monitor deliver clarity of
detail within the image, does it show a good
level of colour fidelity, and can it display fast
motion without any degradation? If the answer
is yes to all three, and it has the right
Video is a visual medium, and no matter how
surveillance systems are used, the end result is
that someone is - at some time - going to need
to view the footage. Whilst much emphasis is
placed upon capturing high quality video, that
investment is wasted unless it can be viewed as
high quality footage. Here, Benchmark looks at
some of the options when selecting a 19 inch
LCD display for video surveillance.
